DINUBA, CA – Alta Irrigation District (Alta) was featured in the Association of California Water Agencies’ (ACWA) March newsletter for its efforts in the Upper Kings River Community Water and Climate Resiliency Program, a collaborative initiative between Alta, Fresno, and Consolidated irrigation districts. The Upper Kings River program was highlighted as a model multi-beneficial project effort, meeting the gold standard for water management sought by fellow ACWA members.
Funded in part by Congressman Costa’s Community Project Funding Request, the Upper Kings River Community Water and Climate Resiliency Program will benefit over 733,000 residents reliant on groundwater by developing 3,300 acres of new groundwater recharge basins. Collectively, the projects under the program encompass over 650,000 acres and are designed to capture excess surface water in wet years for groundwater recharge.
Alta has been a dedicated member of ACWA since its inception and played a role as one of its founding members. Following the passage of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act in 2014, the District has focused on developing projects to serve a dual purpose of capturing more water for growers and supporting long-term groundwater sustainability.
This focus has led to a fruitful partnership. As noted in the newsletter article, “The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, or SGMA, acted as a catalyst for discussions between the three districts, which happen to be among the earliest ACWA members, with Alta Irrigation District being one of ACWA’s founders.”
