Uncontrolled Runoff from Eastside Foothills Overwhelms Alta Irrigation District’s Ditches
Dinuba, CA – Record rainfall on the Valley floor and in the foothills east of Alta Irrigation District (“District”) this year generated uncontrolled runoff that overwhelmed local waterways and ditches. Between State Route 180 and Avenue 384 there are at least thirteen creeks that drain into District ditches along with two other waterways – Sand Creek and Cottonwood Creek – that will spill into ditches during high flow conditions. These creeks along with a few other waterways in the northern part of the District started flowing sometime during the last week of January and are still running today. Flood control is the responsibility of the Counties of Fresno and Tulare, not the District.
