The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) was signed into California law in 2014, marking a decade of efforts toward groundwater sustainability. To commemorate this milestone, Alta Irrigation District is highlighting the collaborative efforts between our groundwater sustainability agency (GSA), Kings River East, and the six other GSAs that form the Kings Subbasin.
Much of the success of the Kings Subbasin GSAs can be attributed to their commitment to meet regularly, address challenges, and move forward with a high level of coordination.
Their combined efforts led to the approval of the seven Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs) by the California Department of Water Resources. This approval represents a significant advancement in achieving groundwater sustainability under SGMA. The collaboration between the seven GSAs, including Kings River East, has been crucial in reaching this milestone.

Alta Irrigation District is a member agency of the Kings River East GSA, which is one of seven GSAs located in the Kings Subbasin. The Kings Subbasin GSAs have developed GSPs as a unified effort and operate under a Coordination Agreement to achieve groundwater sustainability together by 2040 under SGMA.
